Old Woman South Prescribed Fire Update
October 2, 2023
Richfield Ranger District, Fishlake National Forest
Central Area, Division of Forestry Fire and State Lands
Actions Taken: Between September 27-30, 2023, the Fishlake National Forest and Utah Division of
Forestry, Fire and State Lands successfully burned approximately 1729 acres of national forest and private
lands in the Salina Creek/Old Woman Plateau areas near Accord Lakes in Sevier County. Both hand ignition
and aerial ignition by helicopter occurred. This phase of burning operations is now complete. The Forest
Service will continue to monitor the area and assess opportunities to continue prescribed fire operations in the
area after conditions dry.
While the area received moisture, and more moisture and colder temperatures are predicted this week, the
public may still see some smoke from I-70 and other roads in the area. Please be cautious while driving as
smoke may limit visibility.
Location: The project area is located in Sevier County east of Salina between I-70 and Accord Lakes. The
project area is comprised of private land and lands managed by the Fishlake National Forest.
Project Purpose: The area is currently overgrown with thick vegetation which can create undesirable
wildfire conditions. Prescribe burning in the area with a low intensity-prescribed burn will reduce this
vegetation and therefore the risk of a high intensity wildfire that can be difficult to extinguish. The burn will
also stimulate the growth of grasses and forbs which benefits many wildlife species including deer and elk.
Partnerships: Fishlake National Forest (USFS), Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands
(UFFSLs), Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR), Private Landowners, and Utah’s Watershed
Restoration Initiative (WRI)
