Turkey Farm Road Fire – 7/16/20

Summary: Fire managers continue to prioritize minimizing fire growth with aggressive action as the fire continues to threaten lands north of BLM administered lands (Red Cliff National Conservation Area/critical desert tortoise habitat) on to Pine Valley Ranger District. The fire continues to creep east through BLM Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness. Aggressive suppression efforts from both aerial and ground resources protected the surrounding communities near the fire area. The fire was mapped at 11,993 acres. Fire managers will continue to construct direct line with crews and aerial resources to keep the fire within the current burned footprint.

Fire Size/Containment: Mapped at 11,993 acres, 40% contained

Location: 3 miles west of Washington City in Washington County

Ownership: State, BLM and Private

Fire Behavior: Moderate, group torching, creeping, smoldering.

Cause: Human-caused, fireworks.

Structures Threatened: No

Structures Destroyed: 1 outbuilding

Closures: Secondary roads west of Washington City and north of St. George, Turkey Track Rd, Danish Ranch Rd, BLM Rd 901, Winchester Trail Road, Icehouse Trail, Yellow Knolls Trail, Black Gulch Trail, Middleton Trail and Mesa Rim Trail.

Evacuations: None

Fuels/terrain: Grass, brush and timber

Resources Assigned: 205 personnel—4 hot shot crew, 4 Type II initial attack crews, 3 Type III Engines, 1 Type IV Engine, 5 Type VI, 2 bull dozers, 4 water tenders, 1 Type II helicopter, 2 Type I helicopters.
