Box Elder Fires – Aug 7
Two new fires were discovered and believed to have been started by the lightning storm that happened on Sunday, August 5. State, BLM and local fire crews are managing the fires for full-suppression.
The Shelter Pass Fire (0% Contained) was located yesterday afternoon on the north end of the Hogup Mountains is estimated to be 4,000 acres and not threatening any structures or infrastructure. Fire managers have elected to take a defensive stance and engage the fire if and when it burns out of the steep terrain.
The Prospect Springs Fire (10% Contained) also made itself known yesterday just south of I-84 near Snowville. The fire quickly burned 500 acres despite retardant drops and dozer line. Crews will continue to aggressively fight the fire and keep it from progressing any further.
The other six fires are in various stages of mop-up and containment:
Name | Acres | Containment | Notes |
Russell | 5,950 | 70% | Full containment expected today |
Curlew | 4,332 | 70% | Full containment expected today |
Hogup W. | 400 | 75% | |
Bovine | 225 | 75% | |
Rock Springs | 10 | 75% | Full containment expected today |
Playground | 3 | 90% | Full containment expected today |
Another set of thunderstorms is forecast for the area today and tomorrow. Fire managers are hopeful that rain will accompany the lightning.
